Set of 13 pieces, with girls representing all the 12 zodiac signs plus Ophiuchus (collated just after Scorpio and before Sagittarius). All pieces use the same palette, "Spaff 8", a seven color palette with dark yellow, brown, pink and blue.

If you started following me recently, let me show you one of my personal best Pixel art piece: a set of 13 zodiac pieces with "Spaff-8", described in Lospec as "The perfect general-purpose palette, carefully optimised to make everything look equally terrible."

If you use everything with intent, the colors will sing for you.

SPAFF 8 Palette, Created by GooGroker. The perfect general-purpose palette, carefully optimised to make everything look equally terrible.

I've always been against the notion of "objectively bad", especially in art. How can you be so sure of something's quality in this field, where everything is so subjective? I didn't like this palette being created as a joke and as a thing to be avoided; I embraced it and understood its strengths.

So, I made this set as a criticism to Lospec's idea of certain palettes being bad for art. Good or bad is subjective. With creative thinking and understanding color limitations, it's possible to make fun art.

In their pursuit to make a "bad palette", the Lospec community created something that is reminiscent of old EGA palettes, and the overall warmer tones give it a touch of traditionality. I took inspiration of Alphonse Mucha's posters (my girlfriend's favorite artist) and old PC88 games to create these designs.

If you want to foster creativity, then you should do away with arbitrary blockades such as "objectively bad colors and styles". This helps no one. It's inane at best and authoritarian at worst. I doubt people created this palette for nefarious purposes, but assigning certain art as right or wrong feels like a red flag to me.
